Farmhouse rooflines older than the town itself
Guilderland's land was already being farmed along the Normans Kill by the late 1600s, decades before the town formally incorporated on February 26, 1803 after splitting from Watervliet -- a Dutch-settlement history that left a scattering of older farmhouse rooflines mixed in among the area's much newer subdivisions. The Gelderland-derived name, suggested by Lieutenant Governor Jeremiah Van Rensselaer, is one of the few things every era of the town shares.
